Product description

Manage the speed of your single-phase motors using a specialized TRIAC controller. It employs phase angle control to precisely adjust motor voltage and regulate speed. You can achieve accurate speed control from low to high.

Furthermore, you have the option to deactivate the OFF position. This controller is well-suited for voltage-controllable single-phase motors with a maximum current rating of 0,5 A. You can also tailor the minimum speed using an internal trimmer.

It comes in a versatile enclosure suitable for both IP44 inset and IP54 surface mounting. Additionally, all models feature an extra unregulated 230VAC output.

Additional specifications and description

Why control building ventilation
Ventilation is the exchange of indoor and outdoor air. Without proper ventilation the building will seal in harmful pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, too much carbon dioxide and moisture that can be harmful to both the building and its occupants. Apart from natural ventilation (i.e. uncontrolled air movement from windows, doors, or cracks in the home), a ventilation system provides controlled, uniform ventilation throughout the building. It entails using one or more fans and duct systems to exhaust stale air and/or supply fresh air into the house. To optimize the supply of fresh air and reduce costs mechanical ventilation needs to be controlled.
If you are looking for simplified ventilation regulation, the MTY is what you need! Via its built-in potentiometer the fan speed can be set from minimum to maximum speed by turning the potentiometer clockwise. The higher the fan speed, the higher the energy consumption. Reducing the fan speed by just 25% results in energy savings of more than 50%. Depending on the ventilation system, heating costs can also be reduced by optimizing fan speed.

Extras
Despite being a simplified fan speed control solution, the MTY series feature an OFF position - turning the knob anticlockwise stops the motor. Moreover, the device features an extra unregulated output which is active when the motor is enabled. It is called so because it is either ON (230 Volt) or OFF (0 Volt). The MTY also features an internal trimmer for adjusting the minimum fan speed (marked with MIN).

Disabling the OFF position
If necessary, the OFF position can be deactivated. In this case, the motor will run when the power supply is present. As standard, the supply voltage to the device is connected via terminals ↑ and N. To disable the OFF position, you need to connect the supply voltage via the terminals intended for the unregulated output, namely ↓ and N.

The unregulated output
If the supply voltage is connected to ↑ and N, the unregulated output is active while the motor is in operation. The unregulated output is used to control external devices such as a damper, relay, run indicator, etc. If you connect the supply voltage as standard and as advised by the relevant documentation, the unregulated output of your controller will be active when the motor is enabled. This means that when the fan stops, the connected external device will be disabled – the damper will be closed or the run indicator will go out. While the fan is working, the damper will remain open and the indication light will be on. Because this output is either ON (230 Volt) or OFF (0 Volt), it is called ‘unregulated' and its maximum current is 2 A.

Minimum speed setting
This controller uses TRIAC technology (phase angle control) to adjust the motor voltage and to control the fan speed. TRIAC cuts parts of the incoming voltage to reduce the overall motor voltage. Thanks to this technology, the fan speed controller operates without excessive humming and buzzing. Depending on the motor type, the motor might produce a little more noise at lower speeds (due to the imperfect sinusoidal shape of the motor voltage). The minimum motor voltage can be adjusted to avoid motor stalling at low speed and optimize fan speed for your ventilation system. That is why this controller features the internal minimum speed trimmer. Reduced fan speed uses significantly less power than maximum operation and can often be employed, typically during unoccupied or low occupancy.

Use
Inset mounted manual fan speed controllerThe series is developed to control AC fans via reducing the motor voltage. AC fans run on an alternating current and convert alternating current into mechanical power. These controllers reduce the voltage to the motor via phase angle control. Therefore, they are suitable only for voltage controllable motors. Several motors  can be connected to the controller as long as the current limit is not exceeded. In this case all motors will run at the same speed. If you are not sure about your motor type, we strongly advise you to read carefully its accompanying documentation or contact the motor manufacturer.

Two-in-one enclosure
The enclosure of the MTY is made of high-quality ASA plastic in a fine cream colour (RAL9010). This material is UV resistant and protects the electronics against ingress of dust, dirt and water splashes. But before all, it features both inset and surface mounting, thanks to which you can install the MTY in any kind of wall. The protection class is IP44 for inset mounting and IP54 for surface mounting. If you opt for the inset option, the mounting holes fit perfectly the standard European wall boxes. Cleaning the MTY is very easy using only a damp cloth.
