Transformer fan speed controller | 3 x 230 VAC | 5 A
Product description
AC fan speed controller for three-phase 230 V motors. The (combined) maximum motor current is 5 A.
The AC fan speed can be selected via the rotary switch. This 5-step rotary switch also has an OFF position. The motor speed is regulated in 5 steps by varying the motor voltage.
The output voltage is a perfect sinusoidal waveform and ensures quiet operation of the motor.
The housing is IP54 protected to prevent dust, dirt and moisture from entering.
The unit can be wall mounted indoors. The supply voltage is 3 x 230 V AC.

Why transformer-based fan speed control?
Transformer controllers offer several advantages as a speed control solution. They are robust, easy-to-use, efficient, and, last but not least, cost efficient in term of energy savings and long service life. One of the benefits is the absence of electromagnetic excitation in motors, making them suitable for noise-sensitive environments. What you get from the transformer based fan speed control is silent motor operation, convenient step-based control, and a long-lasting controller at a reasonable cost. The autotransformers incorporated in the STR-3 are impregnated with a special material that reduces electrical noise yet further.
Simplified 5-step fan speed control for 3-phase fans
Three-phase fans are commonly used in large-scale applications where a significant amount of air circulation is required, such as in factories, warehouses, gymnasiums, and HVAC systems for large buildings. They provide a smoother and more consistent power supply compared to single-phase motors, which is essential for continuous and heavy-duty operations.
It's important to note that while three-phase fans have many advantages, they require a three-phase power supply, which is typically found in industrial and commercial settings. In residential applications, where single-phase power is standard, three-phase fans may not be practical or cost-effective.
The STR-3 series are used to control the output of three-phase fans by step changing of the supplied voltage. The controller has five speed settings which correspond to five fixed positions of the rotating knob on the front panel. They are suitable for industrial kitchens, warehouses and other industrial premises. The series offers straightforward control for regulating extractor hoods or exhaust fans. These controllers allow for adjusting the fan speed in five steps, ranging from standstill to maximum speed. The controllers do not require configuration or programming. The series features five output voltages: 80, 110, 140, 170 and 230 VAC. As standard, all transformer controllers feature a 230 VAC unregulated output (single-phase). Connecting the controller and the fan is intuitive and extremely simple.
Application
The series is designed specifically to control three-phase motors operating using alternating current and convert it into mechanical power. That is why they are compatible only with voltage controllable motors. Several fans can be controlled synchronously in case their total consumption current does not exceed the maximum permissible value of the controller current. If you are uncertain about the type of motor you have, it is strongly recommended to carefully review the accompanying documentation or contact the motor manufacturer for further assistance.
Unregulated output
The fan speed controller features an additional unregulated output (230 VAC) that is active when the motor is enabled. This output is either ON (230 Volt) or OFF (0 Volt) and is therefore referred to as the "unregulated output". It has a maximum current rating of 2 A. This output is commonly utilized to control various external components, such as a run indicator, damper, relay, and more. For instance, when the fan is not running, the damper is closed, and when the fan is active, the damper opens.
Knob with built-in mechanical time delay
The knob has a built-in mechanical time delay. This is important to prevent internal sparking during switching. Rapid rotation of the switch can bypass this time delay mechanism. If so, the device remains in the "0" position (OFF position) even though the knob has been turned to a different speed setting. Therefore, it is advisable to rotate the knob at a moderate pace, allowing the mechanical time delay to function correctly.
Metal enclosure for surface mounting
The main purpose of an enclosure is to prevent the interior from being contaminated or affected by external debris or environmental factors. That is why the quality of our enclosures is so important to us. The STR-3 feature sheet steel enclosures resistant to external mechanical impact with paint finish. They are EN 62208 certified and their ingress protection rating is IP54 against dust and water.
